Three visits to the REDD+ Emalu pilot site in Draubuta in 2017 included the collection of video footage for the production of documentaries for Fiji’s National REDD+ Programme.
The first trip during the month of August was taken with the Department of Information staff to collect footage and interview Draubuta villagers on the alternative livelihood activities some of which include reforestation, managing a nursery with seedlings for planting and bee-keeping. This production was aired by the Department of Information on the national TV programme – Nation’s Business in October.
The second trip during the week of September 18-22, 2017 to the Emalu owned site of Naduta was to film the emergence of the Southern Hemisphere’s rare cicada or the Nanai – the insect featured on Fiji’s $100 bill. The Nanai is the traditional totem for the people of Emalu and emerges only every eight (8) years in Fiji alone.
During the week of November 5-10, 2017 the third trip was conducted with a continuation of footage collection – this time to the Tobu ni Nanai or the Nanai pool. According to the Emalu people, this pool is where the Nanai descend too at the end of their breeding stage which lasts more than three (3) months.
